Gambiaj.com – (YAOUNDE, Cameroon) – The communications unit of Cameroonian opposition figure Issa Tchiroma Bakary has publicly acknowledged his presence in The Gambia, issuing a new statement that repeatedly refers to him as “President-elect” despite official results placing him second in Cameroon’s October 12, 2025, presidential election.
In a communiqué released on Sunday, 23 November 2025, by lawyer and human rights advocate Me Alice Nkom, spokesperson for what the document calls the “Présidence Élue” (“Elected Presidency”), the camp of Mr.
Tchiroma thanked The Gambia “as well as all the countries that have watched over and continue to watch over his security during the post-electoral crisis.”
The statement, bearing the letterhead “Présidence Élue” and signed by Me Nkom as “Porte-parole du Président-élu” (“Spokesperson for the President-elect”), underscores that the team continues to style Tchiroma as Cameroon’s rightful leader more than a month after the vote.
Mr. Tchiroma “also thanks them for the attachment they express for peace, democracy, respect for human rights, sovereignty, and solidarity among African peoples,” the communiqué added.
The Cameroonian government in Yaoundé has yet to react to either the Gambian government’s earlier confirmation of Tchiroma’s temporary stay or his camp’s latest communication.
According to the official results released in Yaoundé, Issa Tchiroma finished second in the 12 October presidential election.
Nevertheless, he maintains that he won the vote and has continued to proclaim his “victory.” He fled his residence in Garoua in late October, first taking refuge in neighbouring Nigeria before travelling to The Gambia, where authorities say he is being hosted temporarily on humanitarian grounds amid escalating post-electoral tensions in Cameroon.
