Gambiaj.com – (OUAGADOUGOU, Burkina Faso) – Burkinabè demonstrators gathered in front of the Senegalese embassy in Ouagadougou on Tuesday to express their indignation over a recent demonstration held in Dakar. The June 21 event, co-organized by Amnesty International and the Senegalese Coalition of Human Rights Defenders (COSEDDH), called for respect for freedoms in Burkina Faso, sparking a strong response from Burkinabè citizens and officials.
Similarly, the Burkinabè Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed regret and incomprehension regarding the demonstration, criticizing it as interference in the internal politics of Burkina Faso. The government in Ouagadougou emphasized that the demonstration was part of a continued effort by Amnesty International to manipulate public opinion, referencing a February 24 pamphlet by the organization that accused Burkina Faso of human rights violations. The Burkinabè government has dismissed these allegations as false.
“This demonstration is clearly part of the continuation of the logic of manipulation of opinions, adopted by Amnesty International since the publication of its pamphlet of February 24, 2024 based on false allegations of human rights violations in Burkina,” stated a government spokesperson. The statement further accused Amnesty International and several Western media outlets of conducting a campaign to misinform the public about the situation in Burkina Faso and the Sahel, despite significant progress being made on the ground.
The Burkinabè government asserted its commitment to not yielding to the pressures of non-governmental organizations, which it described as having dubious motives and histories marred by scandals involving corruption and human rights violations. The statement underscored the government’s resolve to maintain its stance amidst what it perceives as external meddling.
As tensions rise, the Burkinabè authorities are firm in their position, rejecting what they view as unfounded criticism and unwarranted intervention in their domestic affairs.
