Gambiaj.com – (OLD YUNDUM, The Gambia) – Residents of Old Yundum, particularly those living near Masroor Senior Secondary School, are living in fear as a violent gang continues to wreak havoc on their community. The gang, notorious for their brazen attacks on homes and properties, has left the neighborhood in a state of constant anxiety.

In a recent interview with The Gambia Journal, local residents Sainabou Kongira and Munas Mbasseh shared their harrowing experiences. “These people are attacking our area all the time,” Sainabou Kongira said, her voice trembling with fear. “Right now, they are just outside our compound gate, hitting it, breaking into other people’s homes, destroying their belongings, and smashing the lights. No one dares to go outside.” She recounted this terrifying situation during an interview on Wednesday morning at around 12:30 AM.

The gang’s activities have been a persistent threat to the community, with members frequently engaging in theft and vandalism. Just days ago, an attempted theft of a chicken took place, but a courageous local boy managed to apprehend two of the thieves. “He called for help, and some men beat the thieves before letting them go,” Sainabou added.

Munas Mbasseh described a chilling encounter with the gang. “When the boys were released, they warned that they would come back. And they did. I was lucky because I was at our gate, writing in my notebook, looking for a quiet environment when I saw people approaching with cutlasses, axes, and knives. It was terrifying.”

Despite the danger, Munas tried to remain composed. “I stayed seated and didn’t move when they came near. But the boys who had earlier caught the thieves were nowhere to be found when the gang left,” she stated.

The most recent attack occurred on Monday, further intensifying the fear among residents. “They came back again today, and the situation is scary. Everyone is afraid to send their children outside because it’s not safe,” Sainabou explained, visibly distressed.

The ongoing violence has plunged the entire community into a state of fear and uncertainty. Residents are urgently calling on authorities to take decisive action to restore peace and security to their neighborhood.
