President Adama Barrow inaugurated a 23 megawatt solar plant with 8 MWH of battery storage for the first time in The Gambia on Saturday. This new solar plant is a major step towards achieving sustainable and renewable energy sources in the country.
President Barrow expressed his commitment to further investing in clean energy initiatives to reduce The Gambia’s dependence on fossil fuels and combat climate change. The inauguration of this solar plant marks a significant milestone in the country’s efforts towards a greener and more environmentally friendly future.
“The commissioning serves as a significant milestone in the organization of the energy sector of The Gambia. It has come at a time when the whole world is promoting investment in renewable energy, particularly through solar energy projects,” President Barrow stated.
A dependable energy source is anticipated to assist 1,000 schools and 100 health centers in rural Gambia by 2025, thanks to the president’s ambition of powering the entire nation.
A spokesman for the European Investment Bank stated that “The Gambia Electricity Restoration and Modernization Project will create employment with over one thousand two hundred and fifty direct jobs from the construction site to operation and maintenance.”
The European Investment Bank’s support will play a crucial role in ensuring the success of this project, which is set to have a significant impact on the lives of many in rural Gambia.
“The project would assist eight hundred and thirty-four thousand people,” she continued.
