Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) released its annual World Giving Index on Thursday, August 22, highlighting The Gambia as the 4th most generous country globally.
The index, which ranks countries based on levels of charitable activities such as helping strangers, donating money, and volunteering, placed The Gambia just behind Kenya (2nd) and ahead of Nigeria (5th). In total, three African nations—Kenya, The Gambia, and Nigeria—secured positions in the top 5.
Singapore ranks 3rd, neck and neck with The Gambia. In contrast, neighboring Senegal lags behind, ranking 44th, showing a significant gap between the region’s generosity levels.
Indonesia retained its position as the most generous country worldwide for the seventh consecutive year, with an impressive 90% of Indonesians reportedly donating to charity and 65% involved in volunteer work. The report revealed that 4.3 billion people globally participated in acts of kindness, whether by helping strangers, giving their time, or donating money over the past year.
The World Giving Index, now in its 2024 edition, draws insights from surveys conducted across 142 countries, making it a reliable measure of generosity worldwide. Respondents were asked whether they had helped a stranger, donated money, or volunteered for a good cause within recent months.
CAF’s report underscores the importance of supporting growth in global giving by enhancing our understanding of how communities engage in charitable activities. The organization continues to urge governments, policymakers, and international funders to create enabling environments for cross-border donations and resilient local giving structures.
The inclusion of The Gambia among the top-ranking nations highlights the country’s strong community spirit and tradition of generosity, demonstrating that even smaller nations can lead in global philanthropy.
