Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL) – Following the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit hosted in Banjul, The Gambia’s stance on its relationship with Israel remains resolute despite the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Foreign Minister Dr. Mamadou Tangara reaffirmed the country’s commitment to maintaining diplomatic ties with Israel, even as pressure mounts on countries to isolate Israel over its actions in Palestine.
Minister Tangara addressed reporters at a press conference, stating, “We do not intend to cut our ties with Israel and we do not act by reacting to situations based on the reactions of others.” He emphasized that The Gambia’s foreign policy decisions are made independently and without external influence.
The minister highlighted The Gambia’s diplomatic approach, emphasizing dialogue and nonalignment. “Gambia’s diplomacy is anchored on nonalignment, neutrality, and the promotion of dialogue,” he said. “How can you dialogue with someone when you decide to put him aside?”
Regarding the OIC Summit’s call for an immediate ceasefire in Palestine and support for a two-state solution, Minister Tangara reiterated The Gambia’s backing for these measures. “Gambia strongly believes in two-state solutions,” he affirmed. “Whenever a country, even though you are a friend, if you do something that is not in line with our principles, we will not hesitate to condemn it.”
The Gambia’s hosting of the OIC Summit underscores its role in international diplomacy and its commitment to promoting peace and dialogue. As the conflict in Gaza continues, The Gambia’s position highlights the complexities of balancing international relations with principles of sovereignty and peace.
