Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia is taking significant strides towards enhancing its digital landscape with the validation of the National Frequency Spectrum Assessment Report and the draft National Frequency Spectrum Policy, Strategy, and Action Plan. This initiative, led by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy (MOCDE), aims to ensure the country has a robust framework for the management and utilization of radio frequency spectrum.

This week, a multi-stakeholder workshop was convened to validate these critical documents. The workshop brought together government officials, mobile network operators, internet service providers, and other key stakeholders. The initiative is supported by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in response to a request from the MOCDE, highlighting the international community’s commitment to supporting The Gambia’s digital advancement.

The effective management of the national radio frequency spectrum is pivotal for several reasons. Improved connectivity is a major focus, with the new policy and strategy set to ensure that underserved and unserved areas receive high-quality internet and communication services. By optimizing the use and management of the frequency spectrum, the government aims to enhance connectivity across the country.

Economic prosperity is another key benefit. Leveraging the spectrum is expected to drive innovation, job creation, and economic growth. The implementation of 4G, 5G, and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies will open up new opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs, fostering a thriving digital economy.

Ensuring equitable access to services is also a priority. The new framework aims to bridge the digital divide, providing all Gambians with the opportunity to benefit from the digital economy.

The validation of these documents marks a significant milestone in The Gambia’s journey towards a more connected and digitally inclusive future. With a robust National Frequency Spectrum Policy, Strategy, and Action Plan, The Gambia is well-positioned to harness the potential of digital technologies to drive socio-economic development and improve the quality of life for its citizens.
