Gambiaj.com – (Brighton, UK) – Blistering pace, fearless dribbling, and relentless work rate, Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh is the Premier League’s next breakout star, writes DYLAN JOHNSON. “The Gambian Messi” is quickly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most exciting young wingers. The 20-year-old Gambian has been a revelation since joining Brighton & Hove Albion from Newcastle United in a deal worth roughly €35 million.
Despite his age, Minteh has already demonstrated why he is considered one of the league’s brightest prospects, showcasing a combination of raw speed, power, and attacking threat that makes him a nightmare for defenders.
Minteh’s journey to the top has been rapid. He started his career at Steve Biko FC in The Gambia before moving to Denmark, where he caught the eye playing for Odense Boldklub. After just one season, Newcastle United recognized his potential and signed him, viewing him as a future star. However, just 12 months later, the club’s need to comply with profit and sustainability rules forced them to cash in, and Brighton emerged as the big winners in securing his services.
Since arriving at the Amex Stadium, Minteh has become an integral part of Fabian Hürzeler’s side, making 28 appearances across all competitions and contributing 10 goals and assists. This output is even more impressive considering he missed over a month of action due to a muscle injury early in the season.
Minteh is a devastating presence on the right wing. His top speed has been recorded at 35.38 km/h, making him the fastest Brighton player this season and one of the quickest in the Premier League. His ability to beat defenders with sheer acceleration and trickery sets him apart, making him a key playmaker for the Seagulls. In fact, he has created more chances than Brighton’s star forwards, including João Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma.
There is still room for improvement. His decision-making in the final third needs refinement, particularly when it comes to precision in passing, weighting the ball correctly, and finishing under pressure. Given his extreme speed, situations unfold rapidly for Minteh, sometimes leading to rushed decisions.
However, his relentless work ethic ensures he continues to improve, and his off-the-ball contributions are equally impressive. He ranks among the Premier League’s most effective high-pressing players, consistently winning possession in dangerous areas. Minteh is also one of the youngest players to log significant Premier League minutes this season, ranking in the top 10 for players under 21.
His trajectory points to stardom, and Brighton’s faith in him already looks justified. If he keeps progressing at this rate, it won’t be long before the world sees Minteh as one of football’s elite wingers.
