The Gambia’s Dr. Satang Nabaneh Elected to African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child

Gambiaj.com – (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia) – The Government of The Gambia has announced the election of Dr. Satang Nabaneh as a Member of the African Committee of Experts on the Rights and Welfare of the Child (ACERWC).

Dr. Nabaneh secured 43 votes during elections held on Tuesday at the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Her election places The Gambia among the member states represented on the 11-member body mandated to monitor the implementation of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and to advise the African Union on matters relating to child protection and welfare across the continent.

Dr. Nabaneh is a distinguished legal scholar and human rights advocate with decades of experience in rights-based advocacy, policy engagement, and institutional capacity-building.

She is a co-founder of Think Young Women and the founder of Law Hub Gambia.

Her work has focused extensively on the implementation of key African human rights instruments, including the Maputo Protocol and the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child.

With recognized expertise in child rights, gender equality, and legal reform, Dr. Nabaneh has engaged extensively with both state and civil society actors at national, regional, and international levels.

Her sustained contributions to strengthening child protection frameworks and advancing normative standards within the African human rights system have earned her broad recognition.

The government described her election as a significant achievement for The Gambia, reflecting the confidence of African Union member states in her professional record and longstanding commitment to the promotion and protection of children’s rights.

In a statement issued following the vote, the government expressed profound gratitude to AU member states for their support and trust. It said the election reaffirms The Gambia’s commitment to advancing the objectives of the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and to playing an active role within the African Union system.

The government also congratulated Dr. Nabaneh on her election, assuring her of its continued support as she assumes her mandate on the continental body.
