Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia has maintained its ‘Partly Free’ status in the Freedom in the World 2025 report by Freedom House, with an overall score of 50 out of 100. This score reflects a balance between political rights and civil liberties, each contributing 22 and 28 points, respectively.

This year’s assessment mirrors that of 2024, where The Gambia also scored 50 points, indicating no significant change in the nation’s freedom status over the past year. However, it’s noteworthy that there was a slight improvement from 2023 to 2024, with the score rising from 48 to 50.

Freedom House’s annual Freedom in the World report evaluates the real-world rights and freedoms enjoyed by individuals in 195 countries and 13 territories, based on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1948. The report operates on the premise that freedom for all people is best achieved in liberal democratic societies.

The consistent ‘Partly Free’ status for The Gambia suggests that while there have been improvements in certain areas, challenges remain in fully realizing political rights and civil liberties for all Gambians. The detailed narrative report for The Gambia’s 2025 assessment is yet to be published, which will provide deeper insights into the specific factors influencing the country’s freedom status.

As The Gambia continues its journey towards democratic consolidation, stakeholders and policymakers are encouraged to address the existing challenges to enhance the nation’s commitment to upholding fundamental freedoms and rights.
