The government of The Gambia has ordered the Brikama Area Council to stop building of a makeshift market place in Brikama for women whose stalls were recently destroyed in the “operation clear the roads”.
The executive, acting through Governor Ousman Bojang, accused the BAC in a letter to the Brikama Area Council of demolishing government properties without first obtaining permission in order to make room for the female vendors.
In response, the Brikama Area Council said it obtained approval for all properties subsumed by the Brikama Central Market to be transferred to the Council since August 2020 from the permanent secretary at the Office of the Vice President.
Consequently, in contrast to what the governor said in his correspondence with the Hon. Chairman, the council stated that it never engaged in unlawful property demolition.
The BAC council also reaffirmed its dedication to the development of the West Coast Region and urged the Office of the Governor (WCR) to work with it to achieve its aspirational objectives for the area.
After President Adama Barrow took aim at Brikama Area Council during his Meet The Peoples Tour, rifts between the central government and the Brikama Area Council have become recurrent.
