Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Aliou Sall, the younger brother of Senegal’s former president Macky Sall, has been placed in police custody alongside his wife, Aïssata Sall, after prosecutors ordered his arrest over suspicious financial transactions linked to a prime plot of land in Dakar’s upscale Almadies district.

The case, investigated by the Division of Criminal Investigations (DIC), centers on two large payments flagged by Senegal’s financial intelligence unit, CENTIF, as potentially illicit.

According to reports, investigators are scrutinizing a transfer of 170 million CFA francs, broken into two tranches of 150 million and 20 million, allegedly paid to Aliou Sall by the company Sertem through an intermediary, Léopold Ngom, for what Sall described as a joint real estate project.

A second payment of 70 million CFA francs came from Seny Thiam, identified as the brother of a major real estate developer. Sall told investigators the money was simply a personal loan he had already repaid, but police noted they were unable to contact Thiam, who is currently abroad, to verify the claim.

While Ngom was released after questioning, Aliou and Aïssata Sall remain in custody and could be brought before the financial crimes judges who ordered the probe. Investigators reportedly remain unconvinced by Aliou Sall’s explanations, particularly given the lack of corroborating evidence from key figures in the transactions.

The arrest has reignited public scrutiny of the Sall family’s financial dealings, coming at a sensitive political moment.

Macky Sall, who left office over a year ago, has recently reemerged on the political scene, seeking to counter accusations that his administration was responsible for hidden debt and widespread corruption during his presidency.

Aliou Sall, a former mayor of Guédiawaye, has long been dogged by corruption allegations, including controversies tied to the country’s oil and gas sector.

His latest arrest threatens to complicate Macky Sall’s efforts to reshape his legacy as Senegal continues to grapple with questions of accountability and financial transparency.
