Gambiaj.com – (Banjul, The Gambia) – In the early hours of November 16, 2024, a tragic incident unfolded at the New Wharf in Banjul when Essa Colley, a 25-year-old compliance officer with Global Tracking and Maritime Solutions (GTMS), drowned after falling into the sea. The incident occurred between midnight and 12:30 a.m.
Preliminary investigations by the Gambia Police Force reveal that Essa Colley fell into the water while attempting to urinate after waking up in an empty container situated near the edge of the wharf. Witnesses reported hearing his cries for help but were unable to rescue him due to the strong waves that swept him away.
Personal belongings, including Colley’s helmet, shoes, and clipboard, were discovered at the scene, providing crucial context for the investigation.
Following an extensive search throughout the day, Colley’s body was recovered at approximately 6:00 p.m. The body was identified by his brother, Salifu Colley, before being transported to the Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital, where medical personnel confirmed his death.
In a statement, The Gambia Police Force expressed their condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased, acknowledging the profound loss felt by those close to him.
As investigations continue, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers posed by working near the waterfront, especially in the absence of safety barriers or precautions.
