Chief Justice Hassan Jallow has appointed Justices Sidi K. Jobarteh and Ebrima Jaiteh to the newly established Special Criminal Division of the High Court, as per judicial sources speaking with The Standard Newspaper. The division was established on January 26th of this year.
The Special Criminal Division has been tasked with trying cases resulting from the application of the Government White Paper’s and the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission’s (TRRC) recommendations. Additionally, the division will handle other criminal cases falling under the high court’s purview, as well as those assigned to it by the chief justice.
The creation of this division is expected to streamline the handling of criminal cases, especially those related to the TRRC. It is anticipated that the division’s establishment will facilitate the more efficient management of criminal cases in general and TRRC-related cases in particular.
An Office of the Chief Justice memo from the beginning of the year stated that the Special Criminal Division would support additional executive and legislative measures in this regard.
