Nabil Ammar, the foreign minister of Tunisia, reports that he and Mamadou Tangara, the foreign minister of Gambia, are talking about irregular migration and diplomatic cooperation.
According to Ammar, they are coordinating with global expert organizations to facilitate the voluntary repatriation of undocumented Gambian immigrants who are presently stuck in Tunisia. The intention is to guarantee their safe return and give them the assistance they need when they get back to the Gambia.
On the sidelines of the 10th High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, which began last Sunday in Oran, Algeria, the Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs met with Foreign Minister Tangara. Mamadou Tangara, the Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, attended as Chairman of the African Union Peace and Security Council for December. During the conference, Mamadou Tangara presented a keynote address emphasizing the need of collaborative efforts in ensuring long-term peace and security in Africa.
Nabil Ammar stated that the Tunisian authorities are “Determined to solve the problems of these immigrants within the framework of our national laws and international commitments.” He was quoted as saying.
The Tunisian Minister added that during the meeting with Mamadou Tangara, the expansion of collaboration in many domains, as well as economic and commercial connections between Tunisia and The Gambia, were reviewed. The Tunisian Minister also expressed optimism for future cooperation between the two countries.
Tens of thousands of undocumented immigrants reside in Tunisia, which serves as a major hub for their journey from sub-Saharan Africa to Europe.
