Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Government of Türkiye has delivered 17 Cobra I armored personnel carriers to The Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) as part of a Military Financial Cooperation Agreement between the two nations. This significant contribution comes as an addition to Türkiye’s longstanding support to The Gambia’s defense capabilities and military readiness.
The Cobra I is a versatile 4×4 wheeled armored vehicle designed with an all-welded steel hull to provide protection against small arms fire, artillery shell shrapnel, and some levels of anti-personnel and tank mines, as well as improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Its adaptable design supports various mission requirements by allowing the installation of diverse weapon systems on its roof.
Capable of seating up to 12 people depending on the configuration, the vehicle is equipped with two forward-opening doors on each side of the hull and a one-piece rear door featuring a bulletproof observation window and gun-port. The troop compartment is positioned at the rear, with a centrally seated gunner operating a weapon station mounted on the roof.
The Cobra I’s compact profile enhances its operational flexibility, as it can be transported by aircraft, helicopter, truck, or rail. Additionally, it can be equipped with an optional amphibious kit, enabling it to navigate water without prior preparation.
These vehicles, which are already in service with various branches of the Turkish Armed Forces, represent a significant addition to The Gambia’s military assets, strengthening its capacity to address both conventional and asymmetric threats.
Türkiye has assured The Gambia that its military support will continue, reflecting a growing partnership between the two nations in defense and security cooperation.
This delivery reinforces The Gambia Armed Forces’ capability to respond to modern security challenges, marking a step forward in the country’s defense modernization efforts.
