Gambiaj.com – (Brusubi & Bundung, The Gambia) – The Gambia Police Force (GPF) is investigating two separate drowning incidents that have claimed the lives of two young children, sparking renewed calls for vigilance and child safety.

In Brusubi Phase 2, a one-year-and-six-month-old girl tragically drowned in a private swimming pool within her family’s compound. According to preliminary police reports, the child was left watching television while her mother cleaned a nearby bedroom.

It is believed that the toddler wandered out of the house through an open back door unnoticed and fell into the pool.

She was discovered unresponsive and rushed to Africmed Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her body has since been transferred to the mortuary in Banjul. The mother has been invited by the Brusubi Police for questioning as investigations continue.

In response to the incident, the GPF issued a reminder to all parents and guardians of their legal responsibility to ensure the constant care and protection of children under their supervision.

In a separate incident in Bundung, the body of four-year-old Abdoulie Keita, who went missing after falling into the Bundung-Kotu stream, was recovered after a collaborative search operation.

The effort included Ward Councillor Lamin Darboe, Gambia Fire and Rescue Services, the Bundung Borehole Ward Development Committee, Red Cross volunteers, WACA officials, local residents, and media personnel.

National Assembly Member for Bundung, Hon. Sulayman Jammeh, confirmed the recovery and expressed condolences to the grieving family. “On behalf of the people of Bundung and the grieving family, I extend our deepest appreciation to all who tirelessly participated,” he said.

The boy’s body has been transferred to the mortuary, and burial is scheduled for tomorrow morning.

These heartbreaking events have prompted renewed calls for increased child supervision, particularly around water bodies, as The Gambia enters its rainy season.
