The Drug Law Enforcement Agency (DLEAG) has reported a series of arrests involving two French passport holders who were apprehended this week with illegal drugs in their possession. The agency registered eighteen cases involving twenty suspects, with four cases being referrals from The Gambia Police Force (GPF). These incidents add to the growing list of weekly arrests made by law enforcement in an effort to crack down on drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
All suspects taken into custody were adult males, with a breakdown of nationalities revealing fifteen Gambians, three Senegalese including one French-Senegalese national, one Sierra Leonean, and one Moroccan national holding a French national identity card.
The West Coast Regional Command registered eleven cases involving twelve suspects, with three cases referred from the GPF. Meanwhile, the Kanifing Municipal Command registered four cases involving five suspects, with one case being a referral from the GPF. The Sensitive Investigations Unit (SIU) of DLEAG registered three cases involving three suspects, two of which emanated from the Amdalai border post and one from the Giboro border post.
In total, various quantities of drugs were seized, including Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Resin (Hashish), Skunk, Kush, Ecstasy, and Cocaine.
The DLEAG also conducted preventive drug demand reduction programs, including radio talk shows on several radio stations and a school sensitization program in collaboration with Girls in The Frontline for Development at Somita Upper Basic and Senior Secondary School.
This recent surge in drug-related arrests underscores the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse, particularly highlighting the diverse nationalities of individuals involved, including those with French passports.
