U.S. Citizens in The Gambia and Abroad Urged to Return Absentee Ballots by October 11

Absentee ballot

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Like those currently staying in The Gambia, U.S. citizens residing overseas are encouraged to participate in the upcoming elections by submitting their absentee ballots no later than October 11, 2024, to ensure timely delivery and counting. The U.S. Embassy has provided resources and support to assist Americans abroad with voting from outside the United States.

Absentee Voting Process: Key Steps for Overseas Voters

Eligible U.S. citizens can register as absentee voters and request a ballot through the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA). Completing the FPCA each calendar year ensures access to all federal election ballots, including for presidential, state, and special elections. The Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) website, https://www.fvap.gov/ offers an online voting assistant to simplify this process, providing state-specific instructions and an option for electronic ballot delivery.

Returning Your Ballot: October 11 Deadline

Once absentee voters have completed their ballots, they may submit them via U.S. embassies free of charge or mail them directly at their own expense. Due to potential delays in transit, the Embassy recommends returning ballots by October 11 to guarantee timely delivery. Ballots should be sealed in addressed, postage-paid envelopes, available for download on the FVAP website. No appointment is necessary to drop off ballots at the Embassy, and family members may assist in delivering election materials if needed.

Important Voting Deadlines and Additional Support

Registration deadlines vary across states, with some requiring registration up to 30 days before the election. FVAP provides comprehensive resources to confirm registration, check ballot delivery status, and determine any state-specific guidelines on absentee voting. In addition, some states accept completed ballots by email, providing greater flexibility to U.S. citizens abroad.

Why Overseas Votes Matter

With many elections decided by narrow margins, every absentee ballot counts. For U.S. citizens abroad, voting remains a vital means of contributing to democracy from afar. To stay informed on election deadlines and updates, overseas voters are encouraged to sign up for FVAP’s email alerts or follow the organization on social media.
