The United States has expressed deep concern over the postponement of Senegal’s presidential election, originally scheduled for February 25, 2024.
The delay, described as contrary to Senegal’s strong democratic tradition, has raised alarm bells, particularly regarding reports of security forces forcibly removing parliamentarians who opposed a bill to postpone the election. This action led to a National Assembly vote under conditions that the United States deems illegitimate.
In a press statement issued by Matthew Miller, the Department Spokesperson, the United States urged the Government of Senegal to proceed with the presidential election in line with the country’s Constitution and electoral laws. The statement also called for the immediate restoration of full Internet access and the full respect of freedoms of peaceful assembly and expression, including for members of the press.
The United States emphasized its commitment to engaging with all parties and regional partners in the coming days to address the situation in Senegal. The postponement of the presidential election and the circumstances surrounding it have sparked international concern and are closely watched as Senegal navigates its democratic process.
