Gambiaj.com – (BUNDUNG) – The Opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has launched a legal battle against all sitting governors appointed by President Barrow across the country. UDP members assert that these appointments violate the Local Government Act, specifically citing section 123(1) which states: “There shall be an Area Administrator for each Local Government Area who shall be a senior civil servant appointed by the President.”
The UDP contends that the current governors were not appointed by the President, as mandated by the Local Government Act, rendering their appointments invalid. The party is seeking a court order to overturn these appointments and ensure that new governors are appointed in strict compliance with the law.
A UDP top official told the Gambia Journal that his party emphasized their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that government officials are appointed through proper legal channels. The party believes that adherence to the legal framework is crucial for maintaining good governance and public trust.
The state plans to counter the UDP’s claims by filing a response to their brief. The case is set to be heard in the Bundung High Court, where both parties will present their arguments.
This lawsuit represents another significant legal challenge to President Barrow’s administration after the previous lawsuit by UDP defying the appointment of presidential advisers and ambassadors. It also underscores the ongoing political tensions between the ruling party and UDP. The outcome of the case could have far-reaching implications for the appointment process of local government officials in The Gambia.
