The United Democratic Party (UDP) convened its first central committee meeting of the year at the party’s headquarters in Manjai, where significant leadership changes were announced. Karafa Sonko was elected as the new campaign manager, replacing Momodou Sabally, who has since joined the ruling National Peoples Party (NPP). Additionally, Binta Touray was voted in as the new second vice president of the women’s wing.
Karafa Sonko’s appointment marks a remarkable comeback after his removal as campaign manager last year. He is known for his dedication to the party and is considered a close associate of Kanifing Municipality Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, who is seen as a potential leader within the UDP along with other prominent figures like Brikama Mayor Yankuba Darboe and Banjul Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe.
During the meeting, UDP party leader Ousainou Darboe addressed concerns about the party’s leadership, urging supporters to combat claims that the UDP cannot win elections without a change in leadership. He emphasized the need to reject narratives that undermine party unity based on ethnicity, stating, “Saying this person cannot win an election because he is a Mandinka destroys a party, and you must not accept such narratives.”
The meeting also featured a summary of the party’s activities in the West Coast region, highlighting efforts to uphold principles and strengthen political positions. Despite facing challenges such as prominent defections to rival parties and the loss of esteemed members, the UDP remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing its agenda.
In the capital city of Banjul, the UDP under the leadership of chairman Lord Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe has been actively engaged in addressing various issues and planning strategic campaigns to increase political awareness and support.
Overall, the UDP’s first central committee meeting of the year signifies a renewed focus on unity and strategic planning as the party prepares for future political engagements.
