Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The race to lead the United Democratic Party (UDP) into the 2026 presidential election has gained further momentum, with new contenders formally submitting their bids ahead of the September 2 deadline.
Barrister Lamin J. Darboe, who previously expressed interest in the party leadership during the 2021 selection process, has once again thrown his hat into the ring.
He now joins Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda and the UDP’s long-serving leader, ANM Ousainu Darboe, in what is shaping up to be a highly competitive contest.
Also entering the race is Dr. Muhammed Danjo, a medical doctor from Basse, who confirmed his candidacy after submitting his application.
While he has never held an executive role within the party, Dr. Danjo described himself as a longtime supporter and card-carrying member of the UDP. His entry adds a fresh dimension to the competition for the flagbearer position.
The contest has sparked debates within the party’s grassroots base, with some senior members openly endorsing candidates while others call for restraint. However, in recent statements, local party branches emphasized unity and respect for due process.
The UDP Kombo South branch pledged loyalty to the party’s decision-making structures, declaring, “On the 10th of September, we will stand firmly behind whichever candidate the party selects to carry our flag. Our commitment is to the unity, discipline, and progress of the UDP.”
Similarly, UDP Badibu reiterated its refusal to be drawn into factionalism.
“The UDP is not driven by personal emotions, sentiments, or prejudices. Rather, it is guided by principles, philosophy, and ideology as enshrined in the party’s constitution. Whoever emerges as the chosen flag bearer will receive our full and unwavering support,” the statement read.
With the National Congress set for September 10, anticipation is building within the UDP and across the country as Gambians await the outcome of the internal race that will determine who carries the opposition’s banner in 2026.
