Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, the leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP), addressed his party militants this week at the Party’s Manjai Bureau, urging President Barrow to move beyond rhetoric and take concrete actions to address pressing issues, especially concerning youth and the economy.
Darboe highlighted the alarming rate at which Gambian youth are perishing on the dangerous migration route known as the “Back Way.” He emphasized that the current situation surpasses any previous records, calling for immediate and effective measures to prevent further loss of young lives.
He also drew attention to the economic challenges facing the country, noting the depreciation of the Gambian Dalasi against foreign currencies. Darboe expressed concern over the potential long-term impacts on the country’s economy and the well-being of future generations if the situation is not addressed promptly.
Moreover, Darboe criticized the current administration for failing to fulfill the promises made during the 2016 transition, stating that the realities on the ground do not reflect the touted improvements. He stressed the need for urgent action to salvage the country from its current state.
Darboe emphasized the importance of unity among all ethnic groups in The Gambia, stating that no group should be excluded from the national identity. He refuted claims that any group could be sent out of the country, asserting that all Gambians, regardless of ethnicity, have an equal stake in the nation.
In conclusion, Darboe reiterated his party’s commitment to addressing these critical issues and called on the government to prioritize the welfare of the people above all else.
