The United Democratic Party (UDP) is experiencing internal turmoil as debates escalate over the party’s leadership and its strategy for the 2026 presidential elections. The focus of the debate centers around Ousainou Darboe, the current party leader, and his potential decision to remain the UDP’s flag bearer for the upcoming elections.
On March 17th, Nanama Keita, a UDP militant in the diaspora, ignited the discussion by endorsing the Mayor of Kanifing, Talib Ahmed Bensouda, as the ideal candidate for the presidency in 2026. Keita praised Bensouda’s youth, vibrancy, and successful track record at the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC).
He also challenged the perception of the UDP as a Mandinka-dominated party, suggesting that Bensouda represents a broader appeal.
Following Keita’s endorsement, internal pressure mounted on Darboe, with some party members expressing concerns about his age and the need for new leadership to rejuvenate the UDP’s image and electoral prospects.
Darboe, who has led the UDP for decades and endured multiple arrests and imprisonments during his political career, has remained steadfast in his commitment to lead the party into the 2026 elections.
In response to growing speculation about his future, Darboe addressed UDP supporters, reaffirming his intention to remain as party leader until 2026. He dismissed rumors of stepping down, stating, “I have a legion of ‘soldiers’ that will stop at nothing to keep me. I’m confident that no one in the UDP wants to take my job.”
Darboe emphasized that he would continue as party leader as long as his health and mental capabilities allow, and he pledged to facilitate a smooth transition if necessary.
However, some within the UDP argue that Darboe’s insistence on leading the party in 2026 could harm its electoral chances. They contend that Darboe’s age and long tenure may not resonate with younger voters, and a fresh candidate like Bensouda could offer a more appealing alternative.
Despite the internal debate, the UDP leadership has urged members to focus on party unity and refrain from premature discussions about the flagbearer issue.
Alhagie S. Darboe, the senior administrative secretary of the UDP, issued a statement advising members to avoid discussing the flagbearer issue, emphasizing that the party’s focus should be on winning the 2026 polls.
The intensifying internal debate within the UDP underscores the challenges the party faces in navigating generational shifts and maintaining its relevance in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
The party’s ability to address these challenges and present a united front will be crucial in determining its electoral success in the coming challenges.
