After Senegal’s opposition leader Ousmane Sonko has been released from detention, as well as his designated candidate, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, was released, the two were escorted by a jubilant crowd. However, according to Les Échos, Sonko did not join the procession of supporters and sympathizers of his party to avoid overshadowing Faye.
Instead, dressed in a t-shirt and cap, Sonko, the leader of the Pastef party, was accompanied by close associates, including Birame Soulèye Diop, Mamadou Lamine Dianté, and Ousseynou Ly. The convoy reportedly went directly to the Félix Faure street, where the mayor of Ziguinchor and his companions entered a hotel “incognito.”
It remains unclear whether Sonko spent the night there, as Les Échos did not provide further details.
Meanwhile, in a brief statement (Watch Dakaractu Video below story), Bassirou Diomaye Faye praised the Senegalese people’s mobilization for the Patriots’ cause. He acknowledged their efforts, commitment, and determination during their detention.
Faye expressed gratitude to the people, stating, “We have never seen you weaken in mobilization and in the fight for the Project. Whether it’s Sonko or me, just understand that we came to support you in this struggle you have undertaken.”
He concluded by announcing a press conference for Friday, which he will co-host with Ousmane Sonko.
“We will hold a press conference together on Friday and then continue with the Diomaye President caravan to go inside the country and speak to the Senegalese people.” The location and time of the media meeting have not been specified.
