The Gambia has embarked on a landmark initiative with the launch of its 2024 Population and Housing Census, the first to be conducted digitally in the nation’s history. This significant event took place on Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Sir Dawda Jawara Conference Center in Bijilo, officiated by Vice President His Excellency Mohammed B.S. Jallow.
Standing in for President Adama Barrow, VP Jallow underscored the historical importance of this year’s census, highlighting its crucial role in shaping future policy and decision-making processes. “The numbers we collect represent lives, dreams, and aspirations,” he remarked, emphasizing that accurate data collection is essential for equitable resource distribution and informed development planning.
The Vice President detailed the primary objectives of the census, which include enhancing the understanding of population dynamics, supporting development programs, and enabling evidence-based policymaking. He also extended his gratitude to key stakeholders such as the World Bank, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and other development partners for their invaluable support.
The launch ceremony featured insightful remarks from the Statistician General of The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS), Mr. Nyaksi M.B. Sanyang, who commended President Barrow’s unwavering dedication to national development through the census. He also praised VP Jallow’s extensive background in statistics.
Country Representatives from UNFPA The Gambia and the World Bank also delivered statements, reflecting on the global significance of accurate census data in driving sustainable development. The event was chaired by Development Adviser Serign Falu Njie and included a lively performance by Jaliba Kuyateh & the Kumareh Band, adding a cultural touch to the proceedings.
Preparations for the census are already underway, with the training of enumerators in progress. The actual census will be conducted from May 25 to June 14, 2024, marking a pivotal step in The Gambia’s journey toward a data-driven future.
