Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Government of The Gambia has announced the increment of fuel pump prices and new measures to cushion citizens and businesses from the impact of sharp increases in global fuel prices, approving significant subsidies to keep pump prices below current international market levels.
In a press release issued Friday, the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines said recent weeks have seen a steep rise in global fuel costs, largely driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East that have disrupted oil supply chains and transportation routes.
According to the ministry, indicative fuel prices for April 2026 would have reached D101.29 per litre for petrol and D124.72 per litre for diesel if the full increases were passed on to consumers. These figures represent rises of approximately 22.78 percent for petrol and 47.43 percent for diesel.
However, the government said it has intervened to soften the impact by setting lower pump prices for the month of April.
Under the approved pricing structure, petrol will retail at D98.00 per litre, while diesel will be sold at D95.00 per litre.
The ministry said the adjustment reflects substantial subsidies from the government, amounting to D3.29 per litre on petrol and D29.72 per litre on diesel.
Overall, the total fuel subsidy for the period is estimated at D316,146,722.52.
Authorities said the intervention demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting consumers and businesses from the volatility of the global energy market.
“The government of The Gambia has enacted critical measures aimed at safeguarding citizens and businesses from the significant increases in global fuel prices,” the ministry said in the statement.
Officials also noted that the government, through the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines, will continue to work closely with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) and other stakeholders to ensure a steady fuel supply across the country.
The ministry added that global developments in the oil market will continue to be closely monitored and that further measures could be taken if necessary to protect consumers while maintaining fuel availability.
