Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Honourable Lamin Ceesay has strongly criticized the government over the re-arrest of Ousainou Bojang and his sister Amie Bojang, describing the action as illegal and criminal.
Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly of The Gambia, the Kiang West lawmaker said the executive’s handling of the matter represented a troubling disregard for the rule of law and democratic accountability.
Ceesay stressed that elected representatives have a duty to speak on behalf of their constituents without fear or intimidation.
“Nobody on the face of the earth shall oppress me or make me keep quiet on issues affecting the people,” he declared.
He accused the government of repeatedly showing disrespect toward key state institutions, including the judiciary, the legislature, and independent oversight bodies such as audit institutions. According to him, this pattern of conduct threatens the principle of separation of powers.
The lawmaker cited previous incidents in which he said court decisions were ignored, including the case involving Omar Sarjo, arguing that such actions erode public confidence in the justice system.
Ceesay also broadened his criticism to what he described as governance failures in several sectors. He pointed to the resources spent on the Constitutional Review Commission, which ultimately failed to produce a new constitution, and criticised the handling of the Janneh Commission, claiming that financial offenders had been pardoned.
The Kiang West representative further faulted the government for delays in implementing security sector reforms, arguing that the country continues to rely heavily on foreign military support for national security.
Turning to socio-economic issues, Ceesay raised concerns about challenges facing the agricultural sector and the welfare of young people. He cited delays in agricultural subsidies and unfulfilled government commitments, while also pointing to the continued deaths of Gambian youths attempting irregular migration across the Mediterranean.
Concluding his remarks, the lawmaker called for greater accountability from the government.
“It is high time the people rise up and send a clear message: we need a responsible and responsive government,” he said.
