Senegal Crowned AFCON Champions After Dramatic 0-1 Win Over Morocco

Pape Guèye scored the goal

Gambiaj.com – (RABAT, Morocco) – Senegal are Africa Cup of Nations champions after a 1-0 win against Morocco in a chaotic final in Rabat.

Pape Gueye scored the only goal of the game with a thumping strike into the top corner in extra time.

There were unprecedented scenes in second-half stoppage time as Brahim Diaz missed a controversial penalty, which was awarded on VAR review after he was judged to have been fouled by El Hadji Malick Diouf.

Senegal players left the field in protest at that decision, and after a premature decision ensured VAR could not intervene when Ismaila Sarr thought he had given his side the lead moments before.

Fans broke through hoardings in the stands in the wake of the penalty decision in the ninth minute of added time.

AFCON victory celebrations begin in Dakar

Senegal have tasted both the heartbreak and the joy in recent AFCON finals — they have been leaders in African football for a decent spell now.

Here are the scenes in Dakar, Senegal, as fans begin to celebrate their second-ever continental title.

Justice in the end for Senegal

Had Morocco won that match with a penalty in the last kick of the game, it would have been incredibly cruel.

Not only had Senegal been the better team in the match, but they also had a goal taken away in stoppage time after a really poor refereeing decision.

Jean-Jacques Ndala blew his whistle for a foul a second before Ismaila Sarr headed in, which meant that his colleagues in VAR could not intervene to overturn the on-field decision. There is no guarantee that they would have changed the call, but replays showed that contact from Seck on Hakimi was minimal.

Senegal players and fans will feel that justice has been served this evening.
