Five Arrested Over Alleged Abduction of Berending Alkalo Amid Escalating Gunjur–Berending Land Dispute

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Police in Sanyang have arrested five individuals in connection with the alleged abduction of the Alkalo of Kombo Berending, Abdoulie Sanyang, as tensions continue to simmer over the longstanding land dispute between Gunjur and Berending.

According to the police, the arrests were made on April 1, 2026. The suspects have been identified as Alasana Touray, Yaya Touray, Lamin Touray, Sulayman Touray, and Morro Touray.

Authorities said the five individuals are currently assisting investigators as police work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The alleged abduction comes amid escalating tensions linked to the protracted Gunjur–Berending land dispute. Reports indicate that the village head of Berending was captured by a group of individuals believed to be from Gunjur before being handed over to the police.

The motives behind the incident remain under investigation, but local accounts suggest the act may have been a retaliatory move following an earlier violent episode.

Weeks before the alleged abduction, a man identified as Yaya Darboe from Gunjur was reportedly seriously beaten and injured, allegedly by individuals from Berending in connection with the contested land.

According to accounts circulating in the community, those involved in the capture of the Berending Alkalo claimed their actions were intended to halt what they described as continued attacks on people from Gunjur on the disputed lands.

Police have not yet clarified the exact circumstances of the Alkalo’s capture but said investigations are ongoing, with further updates expected as the inquiry progresses.
