Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Authorities have arrested a prison visitor at Mile 2 Central Prison for allegedly attempting to smuggle prohibited drugs into the facility, officials confirmed on Monday.
The suspect, identified as Binta Jallow, a resident of Brikama Newtown, was apprehended on 16 March 2026 after she reportedly tried to deliver concealed substances during a prison visit.
According to prison authorities, Jallow had gone to the facility to deliver food to a remand prisoner. However, during a routine security screening conducted by officers, a plastic bag containing suspected cannabis and unidentified pills was discovered hidden inside a bowl.
The items were immediately flagged as contraband, leading to her arrest on the spot.
Following her detention, she was handed over to the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG) for further investigation. Officials say she is expected to face charges in accordance with the country’s drug control laws.
Prison authorities, working in collaboration with DLEAG, reiterated their commitment to preventing the infiltration of illegal substances into correctional facilities and maintaining order within the prison system.
They also issued a stern warning to the public, stressing that attempts to smuggle prohibited items into prisons constitute serious criminal offences and will be met with the full force of the law.
