Fire Razes Sona’s Garden in Sanyang, Destroying Crops, Equipment, and Vehicle

Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A fire has caused significant destruction at Sona’s Garden in Sanyang, wiping out crops, farm equipment, and a vehicle, with total losses estimated at D267,000.

The blaze reportedly consumed a wide range of agricultural assets, including banana and papaya plantations, strawberries, guava and orange trees, as well as pomegranate, soursop, breadfruit, sweetsop, and apple trees.

A 2,000-litre water tank, drip irrigation system, horse pipes, roofing timber, and plantains imported from Nigeria were also destroyed in the fire. A vehicle parked at the garden was burned.

The losses are particularly devastating as several of the fruit trees were expected to begin production later this year, dealing a major setback to the garden’s operations.

In a message shared after the incident, the garden’s owner, Amie, expressed gratitude to relatives, neighbours, and well-wishers for their prayers, encouragement, and support, including donations of seedlings and financial assistance.

She described the fire as a trial from Allah and reaffirmed the family’s determination to recover and rebuild.

Amie also clarified that no formal fundraising page has been established, despite inquiries from supporters. She noted that individuals wishing to assist may do so voluntarily through mobile money services or other direct channels.

The cause of the fire has not been disclosed.
