After Gambia Slap, Ghana Part Ways With Coach Queiroz

Gambiaj.com – (ACCRA, Ghana) – The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has parted ways with Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, just weeks after reappointing him to lead the Black Stars. The GFA confirmed that both parties had agreed to terminate Queiroz’s contract following Ghana’s dramatic 4-2 defeat to The Gambia in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Ghana appeared to be in control after Ernest Nuamah and Felix Afena-Gyan gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. But The Gambia produced a remarkable comeback, scoring four unanswered goals to secure all three points.

The defeat left Ghana bottom of their qualifying group without a point from two matches. They had opened their campaign with a 2-0 away defeat to Ivory Coast.

In a statement released by the GFA, Queiroz said the decision was taken because the conditions required for him to carry out the job were not fully in place.

“This was not an easy decision, but both parties agreed that, under the present circumstances, ending our professional relationship was the most appropriate course of action,” Queiroz said.

“The interests of Ghana, the Black Stars, and Ghanaian football are above everything else.”

Queiroz added that the lack of necessary conditions, combined with Ghana’s recent results, contributed to the decision.

Difficult Second Spell

Queiroz leaves after seven matches in charge during his latest spell, recording one win, two draws, and four defeats. Ghana scored five goals and conceded 10 during that period.

His return to the Black Stars followed an earlier spell that began in April, when he was appointed on a four-month contract leading into the 2026 World Cup.

The veteran coach guided Ghana into the knockout stage, with the Black Stars beating Panama and drawing with England before losing 1-0 to Colombia in the Round of 32.

His initial contract expired after the World Cup, but the GFA brought him back on September 2.

Pressure Mounts on Ghana

The GFA must now begin the search for another head coach while Ghana attempts to recover from a difficult start to its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

The Black Stars are already six points behind both Ivory Coast and The Gambia after two matches. With only the top two teams in the four-team group qualifying, the pressure on Ghana has increased significantly.

Ghana’s next qualifying fixture is against Somalia on Wednesday, November 11.
