Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST), through the National Accreditation and Quality Assurance Authority (NAQAA), has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining quality standards in tertiary education in The Gambia, while warning the public against enrolling in institutions that offer degree programs without official accreditation.
In a statement, NAQAA said several higher education institutions in the country are currently accredited to provide degree programs in accordance with national regulations governing tertiary education.
According to the authority, accredited institutions include the University of The Gambia, Civil Service University, University of Education The Gambia, University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology, Sup de Co Banjul, Euclid University, American International University West Africa, Al Ihsan University, Al‑Hikma University, Imam Bukhary University, and the International Open University.
However, the authority does not specify whether the institutions mentioned in the statement are the only ones in The Gambia that have received accreditation.
The authority cautioned that any institution offering degree programs without the required accreditation is operating illegally and in violation of the laws regulating higher education in the country.
NAQAA urged students and parents to verify the accreditation status of institutions before enrolling, stressing that degrees obtained from unaccredited institutions may not be recognized for employment, further academic studies, or professional certification.
The agency emphasized that safeguarding the credibility and integrity of the country’s higher education system remains a central priority.
NAQAA added that it will continue to monitor the sector and take appropriate action against institutions that operate outside the established regulatory framework.
