Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR) – Senegal has dismissed head coach Pape Bouna Thiaw just months after he guided the Teranga Lions to the Africa Cup of Nations title, with the country’s football federation concluding that the team’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign warranted a fresh start.
The Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) announced on Saturday that Thiaw and his entire coaching staff had been relieved of their duties following an assessment of the national team’s performance at the tournament. The federation is expected to provide further details at a press conference on Monday.
World Cup Exit Overshadowed AFCON Success
Thiaw’s dismissal comes despite a remarkable start to his tenure, during which he led Senegal to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations crown in Morocco. However, that triumph was quickly eclipsed by an underwhelming World Cup campaign in the United States.
Senegal entered the tournament with high expectations but stumbled in the group stage, suffering defeats to France and Norway before a convincing victory over Iraq secured a place in the knockout rounds.
Their campaign ended in dramatic fashion against Belgium after surrendering a 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 after extra time in the Round of 32.
The federation reportedly concluded that the performances fell short of expectations for one of Africa’s strongest football nations, prompting the decision to begin a new cycle ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and the road to the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
Thiaw was also facing a five-match suspension stemming from disciplinary action taken after the AFCON final, where he led his players in protesting a late penalty decision, adding another layer of uncertainty around his future.
Patrick Vieira Linked to Senegal Job.
Attention has now shifted to who will lead the Teranga Lions into their next chapter, with former France captain Patrick Vieira emerging as the frontrunner.
According to reports from French media cited by multiple outlets, Vieira is among the leading candidates being considered by the FSF.
Born in Dakar before moving to France as a child, the 50-year-old combines deep Senegalese roots with an impressive international football pedigree.
A member of France’s 1998 FIFA World Cup-winning squad and the UEFA Euro 2000 champions, Vieira enjoyed a distinguished club career with Arsenal, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Manchester City before moving into management.
His coaching résumé includes spells with New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and most recently Italian side Genoa, giving him experience across several of Europe’s top leagues.
While the federation has yet to officially name a successor, Vieira’s profile is seen by many observers as fitting Senegal’s ambition to remain among Africa’s elite while building a team capable of challenging on the global stage.
The FSF is expected to clarify both the reasons behind Thiaw’s dismissal and its plans for appointing a new head coach during Monday’s scheduled press conference.
