Gambiaj.com – (SEATTLE, United States) – Senegal’s dream of reaching the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in dramatic and painful fashion on Wednesday after the Lions of Teranga squandered a two-goal lead before losing 3-2 to Belgium following extra time.
The West Africans appeared destined for qualification after a dominant display that saw them establish a commanding 2-0 advantage. Midfielder Habib Diarra opened the scoring in the 24th minute before Ismaïla Sarr doubled Senegal’s lead seven minutes into the second half, capping a largely controlled performance by Aliou Cissé’s men.
For much of the contest in Seattle, Senegal looked comfortable and on course to secure a historic place in the knockout stages. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the closing stages as Belgium mounted a remarkable comeback.
The Belgian side gradually gained control as Senegal retreated deeper into its own half and struggled to maintain possession. Their pressure finally paid off in the 86th minute when Romelu Lukaku pulled one back, capitalizing on a defensive lapse to beat goalkeeper Mory Diaw.
Just three minutes later, Belgium drew level. Diaw failed to deal with an aerial ball, allowing Youri Tielemans to head into an empty net and force the match into extra time.
The equalizer transformed what had seemed a comfortable path to qualification into a tense battle for survival.
From the Mirage of Qualification to the Nightmare
Extra time produced few clear-cut chances, though Belgium continued to threaten while Senegal missed opportunities to regain the lead. Ibrahim Mbaye squandered one of the Lions’ best openings, further fueling the sense of a missed opportunity.
With penalties appearing inevitable, the decisive moment arrived deep into stoppage time of extra time.
Following a Belgian attack, a VAR review examined an incident involving Senegal midfielder Lamine Camara and Belgian captain Tielemans inside the penalty area. After a lengthy review, the referee awarded Belgium a penalty.
Tielemans stepped up in the 125th minute and calmly converted, sending the ball into the top corner to complete Belgium’s comeback and seal a 3-2 victory.
The defeat brings Senegal’s World Cup campaign to a bitter end and leaves players and supporters reflecting on what might have been. Victory would have sent the Lions into the Round of 16, where a potentially favorable tie against either Bosnia and Herzegovina or the United States awaited.
Instead, Senegal joins a growing list of African teams left ruing missed opportunities at the tournament, with the Lions’ collapse in the final minutes proving one of the most painful exits of the competition.
For captain Sadio Mané and his teammates, the result marks the end of a campaign that had promised so much but ultimately ended in heartbreak on the biggest stage of world football.
