Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Renovation works at the Independence Stadium are nearing completion, marking a significant milestone in the long-awaited restoration of the country’s main sporting facility.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports announced that the stadium, which has undergone extensive rehabilitation, has now entered its final phase. The project forms part of broader efforts to upgrade national sports infrastructure and restore the venue to full international standards.
As part of the technical requirements set by the pitch consulting firm Gregori International, a ground testing exercise is scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026. The session will involve the national Under-20 women’s football team, who will participate in a controlled training exercise on the pitch.
According to the Ministry, the session is not a competitive fixture but a technical assessment aimed at evaluating critical aspects of the playing surface, including safety, ball movement, surface evenness, and traction.

Due to the ongoing works, the exercise will be conducted strictly behind closed doors. The Ministry has informed the public and media that access to the stadium will not be permitted during the session, citing safety and coordination concerns as the project approaches completion.
The Independence Stadium has long served as the country’s primary venue for major football matches, national events, and international fixtures. Its rehabilitation has been closely monitored by sports stakeholders, clubs, and supporters eager for its reopening.
