Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Gambia produced a remarkable comeback against Ghana on Tuesday, overturning a two-goal deficit to secure a 4–2 victory in Accra and hand the Black Stars another damaging defeat in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The result gives The Gambia a major boost after two rounds of qualifying, while Ghana’s troubled campaign has taken another turn for the worse.
Ghana appeared to have the match under control after taking a 2–0 lead in the first half. Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 27th minute after Jerome Opoku was brought down inside the box.
The hosts then doubled their advantage when Afene Gyan, making his first start in more than four years, produced a superb free-kick to leave Ghana seemingly in command.
But The Gambia refused to fold.
The Scorpions pulled one back from the penalty spot after Ghana captain Gideon Mensah conceded a foul in the box. Five minutes later, another defensive lapse allowed The Gambia to draw level before the interval.
The momentum had completely shifted.
The Scorpions Complete The Turnaround
The Gambia carried that confidence into the second half, taking advantage of further uncertainty in the Ghanaian defense.
Mensah endured a particularly difficult night as The Gambia again exploited a defensive error to move ahead, completing a stunning turnaround from 2–0 down.
Ghana pushed forward in search of an equalizer but struggled to recover the authority it had shown during the opening stages. The Scorpions remained composed and eventually added a fourth goal late in the game to seal one of their most memorable away victories in recent AFCON qualifying campaigns.
For The Gambia, the victory represents more than three points. It demonstrates the team’s ability to recover from adversity against one of Africa’s most established footballing nations.
For Ghana, meanwhile, the defeat leaves the four-time African champions bottom of their qualifying group after two matches, without a point and having conceded six goals.
Ghana’s Qualifying Crisis Deepens
The defeat also extends Ghana’s extraordinary winless run in AFCON qualifying to eight matches.
The Black Stars failed to win any of their six qualifying matches for the 2025 AFCON and have now lost their opening two games in the 2027 campaign.
For Carlos Queiroz, the defeat was particularly painful as it came in his first match on Ghanaian soil as head coach.
What began as a promising evening for the hosts ended with The Gambia celebrating a dramatic comeback and Ghana facing renewed questions over its defensive organization and prospects of recovering its qualifying campaign.
