Gambiaj.com – (WASHINGTON, United States) – The US Justice Department is investigating former Department of Homeland Security adviser Corey Lewandowski over allegations that he used his government position to pursue financial benefits, including through dealings involving government contracts.
The investigation followed a criminal referral from the DHS inspector general, which had been examining Lewandowski’s role in the handling of contracts and spending decisions during Kristi Noem’s tenure as Homeland Security secretary.
According to reports, investigators are examining whether Lewandowski sought to profit from his access and influence at DHS while serving as a special government employee.
The inquiry includes allegations that he sought private financial arrangements with Middle Eastern governments involving visa-related matters and that he attempted to obtain payments from government contractors seeking federal business.
The investigation also concerns Lewandowski’s involvement in DHS contracting. Although his position was formally subject to limits on the number of days he could work, he reportedly exercised significant influence over agency spending and contracts.
The DHS inspector general had been examining contracts awarded during Noem’s tenure, including a $220 million advertising contract promoting the administration’s immigration policies.
NBC News has separately reported allegations that Lewandowski sought a payment from GEO Group, a company pursuing government contracts, in exchange for helping protect and expand its interests. The company reportedly rejected the request, while Lewandowski’s representatives have denied that he demanded any payment.
Lewandowski’s lawyer, Adam Trigg, said his client had not been contacted by the Justice Department and denied wrongdoing, saying Lewandowski had served in a voluntary capacity.
President Donald Trump said Thursday that he had heard about the investigation but did not know its details. He said he expected his administration officials to act honestly and that anyone found to have acted dishonestly should face prosecution.
The Justice Department has not publicly detailed the allegations or indicated whether charges will be brought. Lewandowski has not been charged with a crime.
