Gambiaj.com – (MOSCOW, Russia) – Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, warned that Moscow could seize Western vessels in retaliation for the interception of ships suspected of belonging to Russia’s so-called “shadow fleet.”
Putin issued the warning as he supervised Russian Pacific Fleet exercises aboard the cruiser Varyag off the coast of Sakhalin.
He described any attempt by Western countries to seize Russian vessels or sell their cargoes as acts of “piracy and banditry,” warning that Russia would respond “symmetrically” wherever it considered necessary, including in the Pacific.
“We see that the authorities of some countries have recently considered the possibility of seizing our ships and selling the goods they have taken from us,” Putin said.
“If this becomes a reality, we will have to respond symmetrically,” he added.
Warning Over New EU Sanctions
Putin’s warning comes after the European Union approved new sanctions in late July that allow member states to seize and potentially sell oil and other goods transported aboard vessels suspected of being part of Russia’s shadow fleet.
The term “shadow fleet” refers to a network of ships believed to be used by Moscow to circumvent Western sanctions imposed on Russian oil and other commodities following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian president’s remarks appear aimed at deterring European countries from enforcing the new measures, particularly those involving the seizure and sale of cargoes aboard intercepted vessels.
So far, Sweden is the only country known to have decided to hand over a suspected Russian shadow-fleet cargo ship to Ukraine. The vessel was intercepted in March and was reportedly carrying Ukrainian grain allegedly taken from Russian-occupied territories, according to Kyiv.
Tensions in the Pacific
Putin made the remarks as Russia conducted naval exercises in the Pacific, a region where military tensions have increased amid growing strategic competition between Russia, the United States, and its allies.
The exercises come about a week before planned joint military drills between the United States and South Korea, which are designed to simulate responses to a potential attack by North Korea.
Putin said Russia’s response to any seizure of its vessels could take place “anywhere,” including in the Pacific, signaling that Moscow could seek to broaden the consequences of Western measures beyond European waters.
His comments add to growing tensions between Russia and Western countries over the enforcement of sanctions and the increasing use of maritime measures to disrupt Moscow’s efforts to circumvent restrictions on its exports.
