Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has promoted the top leadership of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), elevating the Chief of Defence Staff and two other senior commanders to higher ranks.
The promotions, which took effect on August 4, 2026, were made by President Barrow in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces under powers vested in him by the Constitution.
CDS Elevated to Lieutenant General
Chief of Defence Staff Major General Ousman Gomez has been promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General.
His deputy, Brigadier General Sait Njie, has also been elevated to Major General.
Meanwhile, the Commander of the Republican National Guard, Colonel Alagie Sanneh, has been promoted to the rank of Brigadier General.
Promotions Follow Recent Appointments
The promotions come shortly after the three officers were appointed to their respective command positions within the Gambia Armed Forces.
According to the GAF, the new ranks are commensurate with their appointments and responsibilities within the military command structure.
The Armed Forces has congratulated the three officers on their promotions and wished them a successful and distinguished tenure in their respective positions.
