Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gaùbia) – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has issued a clarification dismissing what it described as false information circulating on social media regarding voter cards issued during the 2016 supplementary registration exercise.
In a press release dated April 13, 2026, the Commission stated unequivocally that all voter cards issued in 2016 were declared null and void prior to the commencement of the 2021 General Registration of Voters. It stressed that only voter cards issued during the 2021 registration exercise remain valid and will be used throughout the 2026–2027 electoral cycle.
The clarification comes amid growing online claims suggesting that the 2016 voter cards could still be used in the upcoming elections, a position the IEC has firmly rejected.
The Commission further reminded the public that Gambians who successfully registered during the 2021 exercise must not attempt to register again during the ongoing supplementary voter registration period, which runs from April 8 to May 21, 2026.
At the same time, the IEC encouraged eligible citizens who were unable to register in 2021, as well as those who have turned 18 or will attain the age of 18 by December 5, 2026, to take advantage of the current registration window.
Reaffirming its commitment to transparency and credible electoral processes, the Commission urged the public to exercise caution and avoid being misled by malicious or inaccurate information circulating online. It added that all relevant and timely electoral updates should be obtained directly from the IEC through its official communication channels.
The statement was signed by IEC Chairman Jelly Joseph Colley.
