Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – Former Vice President Fatoumata Jallow Tambajang has renewed her discontent with the appointment of Cherno Amadou Sowe as Gambia’s new Auditor General. She says he is unfit for the role.
Tambajang made the remarks in an interview with Fatou Touray of Kerr Fatou. She spoke on Thursday, the same day she submitted an application to register her new political party, the Democratic Renaissance Party (DRP).
During the interview, she also criticized the removal of former Auditor General Modou Ceesay from office.
Tambajang alleged that Sowe once served as general manager of the Gambia Women’s Finance Association (GWFA), an organization she helped establish. She claimed he embezzled association funds during his time there and later ran to the United States.
“The current Auditor General… He was our general manager. He embezzled our funds,” she said.
According to Tambajang, the matter went before a court. She said the court ruled that Sowe must repay the money. She claimed he made only a partial payment.
“He paid us some advance, and up till now, I think he owes about 3 million plus,” she said. She added that with accumulated interest, the amount now stands at about six million dalasi.
Tambajang said the case may have lapsed under the law after six years. She said the association is now engaging a lawyer to review the matter. She said they may need to return to court.
She stressed that the funds in question belonged to Gambian women. She said the GWFA was founded by 11 women, and it grew to serve about 49,000 women nationwide within five years.
“So I am here openly saying that… I’m against the appointment of that Ahmadou Sow as Auditor General. He is corrupt. He is not honest,” Tambajang said.
She said she would continue to pursue the matter on behalf of the association.
The Gambia Journal has not independently verified the allegations. Efforts to reach Mr. Sowe for comment were ongoing at the time of publication.
