Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The White House television press pool has suspended its coverage of President Donald Trump after the administration prevented CNN from carrying out its scheduled duties as the pool’s lead network this week.
Bryan Boughton, Washington bureau chief of Fox News and acting chair of the five-network TV pool consortium, announced the decision on Monday, saying there would be no replacement for CNN.
“This follows the White House’s position preventing CNN from fulfilling its assigned pool duties,” Boughton said in a note to pool members.
CNN had been scheduled to provide the shared television and audio feed of Trump’s activities this week, including his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly. The White House’s daily schedule on Monday did not name a primary TV pooler after CNN was removed.
The TV pool is a long-established system involving ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News, and NBC. The networks rotate responsibility for providing footage of the president to the wider press corps, particularly during events where space is limited, such as aboard Air Force One, in the Oval Office, and at presidential travel events.
The other White House press pools, including print and radio coverage, will continue operating normally.
Networks Reject Restrictions on Coverage
The five television networks issued a joint statement saying the public has an interest in receiving “accurate, independent information” about the government and arguing that administrations should not restrict news organizations because of their reporting.
The dispute follows Trump’s decision on Friday to bar CNN, MS. Now, and Politico from the White House. The administration subsequently denied reporters from the three organizations entry to the White House and confiscated their press credentials.
The three organizations filed a lawsuit against Trump and senior administration officials on Monday, arguing that the restrictions violate First Amendment protections and amount to discrimination based on their reporting.
CNN remains part of a separate pool providing coverage of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also in New York for the UN General Assembly.
Trump Defends White House Media Ban
Trump has defended the restrictions, saying on Truth Social that the administration was not conducting an “assault on the Free Press” but was instead confronting what he described as “FAKE NEWS.”
He has accused the targeted outlets of deliberately publishing negative stories about him and his administration but has not provided specific examples to substantiate the allegations.
The suspension of the presidential TV pool adds a new dimension to the dispute because the system is designed to ensure that television outlets across the United States and internationally can obtain a shared record of presidential activities, even when individual news organizations cannot independently access those events.
The legal challenge by CNN, MS NOW, and Politico is now set to test the administration’s authority to restrict White House press access, while Monday’s TV pool decision demonstrates the immediate operational consequences of CNN’s exclusion.
