Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – A five-day delegation from the ECOWAS Parliament’s Committee on Oversight has concluded an assessment of the ECOWAS Mission in The Gambia (ECOMIG), focusing on the mission’s operations and the country’s preparedness to gradually assume full responsibility for its security.
Led by Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe Jr., the delegation visited The Gambia from 27 to 31 October 2026 as part of the ECOWAS Parliament’s oversight responsibilities.
The assessment examined ECOMIG’s mandate, operational performance, use of resources, and challenges, as well as its cooperation with Gambian defense and security institutions.
A central focus of the visit was the transition of security responsibilities from ECOMIG to the Gambian security forces. The delegation sought to determine the conditions required for such a transfer to take place safely and sustainably.
On 28 October, the delegation visited ECOMIG Force Headquarters, where it was received by Force Commander Colonel Aliou Tine. Members were briefed on the mission’s mandate, operational activities, achievements, and challenges.
The delegation also discussed ECOMIG’s contribution to peace and stability in The Gambia, its coordination with national security institutions, and progress towards the transfer of responsibilities.
Following the briefing, the delegation toured the Force Headquarters camp to observe the mission’s operational environment and activities. It also visited the NIGCOY camp, allowing members to assess ECOMIG’s work at the contingent level.
The visit concluded on 31 October, but the information released on the mission does not provide specific findings or recommendations from the parliamentary delegation.
It therefore remains unclear whether the assessment found The Gambia fully prepared to assume ECOMIG’s responsibilities, identified gaps requiring further support, or recommended a specific timeline or conditions for the eventual withdrawal or reduction of the regional force.
The assessment nevertheless places the future of ECOMIG and the readiness of Gambian security institutions under renewed regional parliamentary scrutiny as ECOWAS considers the conditions for a sustainable transition.
