Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has urged Gambians to verify their voter registration details, following concerns over missing names and discrepancies in polling station assignments ahead of the 2026 presidential election.
The issue was raised during an engagement between the IEC and the National Assembly’s Public Enterprises Committee (PEC), where lawmakers questioned election officials about the ongoing verification of the provisional voter register.
Concerns Over Missing Names
Committee members raised concerns about reports of voters being unable to locate their names on the voter register or discovering that they had been assigned to polling stations different from those they expected.
They questioned how voters would know whether their registration details were accurate if they did not participate in the verification exercise.
In response, IEC officials explained that the verification process is designed to allow voters to confirm that their names appear on the register and that they have been assigned to the correct polling stations.
The Commission said the exercise also provides an opportunity for discrepancies and errors to be identified and corrected before election day.
IEC Urges Voters to Verify Details
The IEC particularly encouraged newly registered voters and those who have transferred their registration to take part in the verification exercise.
Officials warned that failing to verify registration details could result in difficulties on polling day if errors or changes in polling station assignments are only discovered at the last minute.
The Commission assured the committee that mechanisms are in place to receive complaints and address verified discrepancies before the final voter register is certified.
The IEC has repeatedly urged registered voters to take responsibility for checking their details, stressing that early verification is essential to ensuring that eligible voters can cast their ballots without unnecessary difficulties on election day.
