Gambiaj.com – (BRIKAMA, The Gambia) – Former National People’s Party (NPP) high-profile politician in the West Coast region, Fanding Baldeh, was taken into police custody on Thursday after officers visited his residence in Brikama, in an incident reportedly linked to a political message displayed on the rear of his pickup truck.
The operation, carried out by officers attached to the Police Traffic Brigade and the Kanifing Mobile Traffic Unit, has drawn significant public attention amid questions over the circumstances surrounding Mr. Baldeh’s detention.
Police Visit
According to Baldeh, police officers arrived at his home on Thursday afternoon and instructed him to report to the Mobile Traffic Headquarters in Kanifing over the “No to Third Term” message displayed on the back of his vehicle.
Baldeh said he asked the commanding officer, whom he identified as Manlafi Barry, whether he was being arrested or merely invited for questioning.
“He told me it was an invitation,” Baldeh said, adding that he immediately attempted to contact his lawyer before complying.
However, in a subsequent social media update, Baldeh claimed the situation had changed.
“It’s confirmed! I am being arrested!!!” he wrote, alleging that the commanding officer later informed him that he was under arrest.
Witness Accounts
Witnesses said officers from the Kanifing Mobile Traffic Unit arrived at Baldeh’s residence shortly after 2:30 p.m. before escorting him to a police station.
According to sources familiar with the incident, officers did not immediately disclose the reason for the operation, instead informing Baldeh that the purpose of his detention would be explained at the station.
No Official Explanation Yet
The police had not issued an official statement at the time of publication, and it remains unclear whether Baldeh has been formally charged with any offence.
The reported link between the detention and the “No to Third Term” message on his vehicle has fuelled public interest, particularly given Baldeh’s previous prominence in the West Coast region within the ruling NPP before his departure from the party.
Until the police provide an official explanation, the reasons for Baldeh’s arrest are expected to remain the subject of widespread public discussion and speculation.
