Gambiaj.com – (BANJUL, The Gambia) – President Adama Barrow has appointed Edrissa M.O. Faal as The Gambia’s new Chief Justice, with effect from Saturday, August 1, 2026.
The appointment was communicated to judges, magistrates, cadis and staff of the Judiciary in a notice dated July 31 and signed by the Judicial Secretary on behalf of the Chief Justice.
Faal succeeds Hassan Bubacarr Jallow, whose tenure as Chief Justice has come to an end following his retirement after 54 years of public service.
Jallow’s Five-Decade Career Ends
Chief Justice Jallow formally retired following a ceremonial farewell held at the Law Courts Complex in Banjul, marking the end of a judicial and legal career that spanned more than five decades.
During his long career, Jallow served in several national, regional, and international legal institutions, establishing himself as one of the country’s most experienced legal figures.
His departure brings to a close a period in which he led the Judiciary through a number of institutional and legal challenges.
Faal Takes Charge
Faal now takes over leadership of the Judiciary at a time when the institution faces growing demands to improve access to justice, reduce delays in the courts, and strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice.
The Judiciary has directed all judges, magistrates, cadis, and staff members to take note of the appointment, which takes effect on August 1.
The new Chief Justice will therefore inherit an institution under pressure to deliver faster and more accessible justice while maintaining judicial independence and public trust in the rule of law.
His appointment also comes as The Gambia continues to pursue broader reforms within its justice sector, including efforts to improve the efficiency of the courts and strengthen the administration of justice.
