Gambiaj.com – (DAKAR, Senegal) – Patrick Vieira has officially been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal national football team, the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) has confirmed.
The appointment was approved unanimously by the federation’s Emergency Committee during an extraordinary meeting held by videoconference on Monday, August 17, 2026.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 18, the FSF said all statutory members of the Emergency Committee participated in the meeting, except its sixth vice-president, Cheikh Ahmet Tidiane Seck, whose absence was duly excused.
“Following deliberations, the Emergency Committee unanimously approved the appointment of Mr. Patrick Vieira as coach of the Senegal National ‘A’ Team,” the federation said.
New Chapter for the Lions
Vieira’s appointment marks a new chapter for the Teranga Lions following the end of Pape Thiaw’s tenure.
The FSF said the decision reflects its ambition to establish a high-level technical setup capable of matching Senegal’s sporting ambitions.
Vieira, a former France international and 1998 World Cup winner, brings extensive experience from both his playing and coaching careers. His appointment represents his first opportunity to manage Senegal’s senior national team.
The former midfielder has previously coached at the club level, including spells in England, France, and the United States.
Contract Details Still Being Finalized
The federation has not yet disclosed the financial or contractual terms of Vieira’s appointment.
It said discussions concerning the administrative and contractual arrangements for his assumption of duties are still ongoing between the two parties.
The FSF also said a date for Vieira’s official presentation to the Senegalese public has yet to be determined. Further communication will be issued regarding his presentation and the next stages of his installation.
Vieira now takes charge of a Senegal side that has established itself among Africa’s leading footballing nations in recent years. His appointment comes with significant expectations as the Lions begin a new cycle under a coach whose international pedigree and experience will be closely scrutinized.
The challenge for the former World Cup-winning midfielder will be to maintain Senegal’s position among the continent’s elite while building on the team’s recent successes.
